why is it that when I deleted my account a few years ago (stupidly) I can no longer use the email address connected with the old account to create a new one?

You may have "deleted" the account, but the info is still in the system and it is not gonna let you use the addy for a new account.

Can I delet my account and my posts go away?

No. When you delete your account people won't be able to click on your name to view all of your previous posts that way, but they will still show in the thread.
